UIE at our H4H work site
In the summer of 2005, we devoted a day to helping build at the Avondale, Redmond Habitat for Humanity site. Now, almost 5 years later we spent our lunch break on April 15th reminiscing about our ‘first.’ Some recalled how hot it was, the jobs we were assigned, who was there, what we had that day for lunch, and how far along the project was. All agreed on the impact it had on us as a company and as individuals. For the past year, we have been planning and looking forward to our return. It was especially those who were there for our Avondale build who were first to put their name down on our list of volunteers. Habitat is a one-day commitment, but one you can’t seem to do just once.
Our day was a gift, as much for us as for the family who will hopefully soon move in to Issaquah Highlands. The staff at Eastside King County Habitat for Humanity and the Americorps team were incredibly gracious and passionate and knowledgeable, making the day a wonderful experience.
Greg and Lance helped out on the roof (harnessing in was not one of my goals for the day).
Jeremey and Satoshi were always carrying out some new project- but what I was told they actually accomplished was “siding the front of the house.” This entailed lots of moving, sawing and nailing.
Jeff and Patty, I am sure are still trying to recover from sinking and caulking the nails around the entire duplex.
John was tasked with putting up the cornice piece under the peak of the roof. John, as far as we have heard, no one has had to tear it out (again) and re-nail it.
As we laughed and wondered “What company was here yesterday?” (some were tasked with removing yesterday’s work), we hesitated to state what we all were thinking. “Will tomorrow’s team ask, ‘What company was here yesterday?’” I became pretty confident as we cleaned up, that won’t be the case.
At UIE, we are used to teamwork and joining with other teams to accomplish a goal. We know the value of a good team, and the challenges associated with those temporary alliances. EKC Habitat for Humanity has a great team- and we are looking forward to joining with them again in June!
