So you’ve likely heard the news, Samsung released its Widget SDK on Monday. This is something we’ve been very excited about since our announcement in April that Samsung was working with UIE. This SDK has come together with a lot of blood, sweat and tears from our engineering team who’ve worked to make it easier for developers to reach the Samsung line up of touch screen phones.

One of the great things about the Samsung SDK project for UIEvolution is that it was a strong fit. We always highlight our cross platform approach to delivering applications across mobile devices regardless of OS, browser or network , and were able to bring some lessons learned from our UIEngine SDK – which just so happens to also be cross platform.

By launching the Samsung Mobile Widget SDK, Samsung is opening up their unique TouchWiz technology to third parties.  As Engadget highlights, the integration of the Virtual Device Lab is a boon for developers who don’t have access to the full line of phones. This covers WinMo, Symbian, Java, and their proprietary OS’s. Samsung has also done something that takes their program to the next level and makes what they’re doing very interesting for developers, Samsung recognizes the importance of great content and is providing developers with an opportunity to get unique content into the hands of consumers. The Samsung Mobile Innovator Program will have a little different feel than the traditionally arms-length relationship that you find between developers and their distribution channels.

So while we can’t share all of the details of program, Samsung is making some good decisions and it’s fun to have a front row seat… What are you waiting for? Go, develop you’ve only got so much time before the Omnia II arrives.
